What do I have to do?

It’s really easy… just contact our Association. We will help you through the whole process.

Once we have your details we forward them to Territory Families, Housing and Communities who are the children protection government department. They will then contact you to progress your application, complete a number of checks and ask you questions about your life, your home and why you want to help.

The decision to accept you as a carer is made by Territory Families, Housing and Communities. While we don’t make the decision, we can give you advice and support to understand the process.

There are a few steps in the process in becoming a foster or kinship carers …

The best part is, we provide our services at no cost!  There are no costs associated in becoming a member. All the services we provide assist to ensure you have a positive experience and you are recognised, respected and valued for the important volunteer work you provide to your community.

Already a Foster or Kinship Carer?

As the Peak Body for foster and kinship carers in the Northern Territory, we exist solely to support, empower and represent those special people that have chosen to open their homes and their hearts to children when they need it the most. There are so many benefits to being a member that we can’t wait to share with you!  See our Services page for more information.

Why should I join Foster and Kinship Carers Association NT?

There are many great benefits to our membership which include:

  • Dedicated advocates who can help you deal with complex matters relating to foster or kinship care or just help you communicate effectively with Territory Families, Housing and Communities. Our trained and experienced advocates are just a phone call away.
  • Opportunities to meet up with other carers in a relaxed and informal setting to talk through wins, challenges and take a break.
  • Informative training and workshops for carers, and social events. These events are great opportunities to connect with other foster and kinship carers so you can create your own support networks as well.
  • Great networks with local organisations so we can refer you for specialist help and support or connect you with other carers who understand your experience.
